Girlfriends: How Many Friends Do You Have?

As we go through the different stages of our life we start to collect girlfriends.  However, as I collect girlfriends I start to rely on each of them for different types of support and/or companionship.  Like who you call to talk about your weekend plans, may not be the same person you call to discuss a serious issue, like your health.  My girlfriends fall into two categories: gal pals and buds.

So, who are your “gal pals” and who are your “buds”? Your gal pals are your best-girlfriends.  You know who they are-you share your darkest secrets with them.  Your gal pals will never judge you or pretend to have the answers.  Your “Buds” are those who you go to from day-to-day.  Your buds are who you call for companionship with no drama. Of course, you are blessed if your girlfriends fall into both categories.

While most of my girlfriends still live in Illinois, I have others who have moved on to other states as well – New York, Georgia, and New Hampshire. We do make the best of it, talking at least once a month and mixing it up in our hometowns or running away and meeting elsewhere to catch up and enjoy big belly laughs over martinis and/or margaritas. Last September I met a couple of my gal pals in Miami (margaritas), and in November I met another in Maine (martinis).

Do you have girlfriends you enjoy for different reasons? How do you keep your gal pal bond?

As always, please feel free to share your thoughts.  I hope that by sharing my experiences you find strength, hope, and solutions when you make a commitment to live beyond your illness.
