The hot days of the summer are finally here. The kids are out and about, the visitors are coming in to town and everyone wants to see something new. If you live in or will be traveling to the Central Florida area, here are just a few ideas to help keep you busy in the upcoming weeks:
June 8-10: Disney Star Wars Weekends, Lake Buena Vista The Force is always with you as Walt Disney World Resort‘s Hollywood Studios Park sets the scene for an out of this world event: Star Wars Weekends. The event features celebrity autographs, shows and a nightly party with Wookies, Ewoks, Stormtroopers and other characters from the Star Wars series. Visit http://www.DisneyParks.com.
June 3-24: Sarasota Music Festival, Sarasota. For three weeks each June, internationally recognized guest artists and student musicians come together to study and perform chamber music. Festival Passes, which allow access to master classes and rehearsals, may be purchased, and eight student concerts are free and open to the public.Visit http://www.sarasotaorchestra.org.
June 8-10: Soccer on the Beach Tournament, Daytona Beach. “Soccer on the Beach” is a family oriented boys, girls and coed soccer tournament held on the beaches of Daytona (June 17-19), Clearwater (July 15-17) and Fort Myers (Aug. 5-7). No shoes allowed. Visit http://www.socceronthebeach.com.
June 9-10: Tampa Bay Caribbean Carnival, Tampa. Enjoy the sights, sounds, culture and food of the islands. Event includes steel band performances, an international salsa performer, a costume contest, arts and crafts, exhibits, live Caribbean music, costume parade and food vendors. At Raymond James Stadium, Saturday noon to 10 p.m., Sunday 1 to 10 p.m. Advanced tickets $10, day-of tickets $15.Visit http://www.tampacarnival.com.
June 22-24: Harvest Festival, Clermont. Annual grape stomping, arts and crafts, live music, wine and food. Complimentary winery tours and tasting. At Lakeridge Winery and Vineyard 10 a.m.-5 p.m. $2 donation. Visit http://www.lakeridgewinery.com.
June 23: Art Walk on Flagler Avenue, New Smyrna Beach. Display of art works by resident and visiting artists , along with entertainment, demonstrations and a free prize drawing. June 23-24: Downtown Dunedin Craft Festival, Dunedin. Pottery, photography, glasswork and woodwork are among the crafts offered at this craft festival. Enjoy the Green Market all weekend. Downtown, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free.Visit http://www.artfestival.com/events.
June 23-July 4: Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix Festival, Sarasota. Festive activities leading up to offshore race by million-dollar cigarette boats, with race day on July 4. You don’t need a ticket and you can come as you are. Events include golf tournament and Festival Kickoff Party, Festival Car Show, Parade of Boats downtown followed by Parade After Party Celebrity “Meet and Greet”, “The Friendliest Catch” Fishing Tournament for the physically and mentally challenged, Meet and Greet Who’s in the Driver’s Seat and World’s Largest Offshore Party at Hyatt Regency ballroom; “High Heel Hike” for Autism, Motorcycle ride and pancake breakfast; Annual Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix Boat Race; and all culminating in a fireworks display, July 4. So many choices, I hope to experience at least one of these events this month. The Caribbean Festival this weekend sounds fun and it is my birthday weekend… but the Art Walk in New Smyrna Beach at the end of the month sounds fun too. I have to pace myself.
