Why did I get fibromyalgia?

The consensus is Fibromyalgia Syndrome is likely to happen to those, mostly women, who are hard-working, highly focused and ambitious.  Think  of those you notice are obsessive perfectionists.  It doesn’t mean if you are an obsessive perfectionist you will get it. This is just a pattern the scientists notice with those who are diagnosed.  There is no treatment or cure for fibromyalgia.

I have seen about 7 specialists and read countless studies.  Unfortunately, this syndrome has plagued millions since the 1970’s, and no one has figured out why it happens or how to control it.

What’s the big deal?

Pain is the primary problem. Imagine the worst flu on the worst day and having that feeling as your constant companion as you continue to work and live, not just a week, but for months, or years. There have been times where I could feel my innards vibrate while I took the lightest steps.  Trying to live while experiencing excruciating pain takes a lot of physical and mental strength.  Insomnia, and fatigue I would say are the most challenging symptoms to overcome while dealing with the pain.  There are a myriad of other symptoms those with fibromyalgia suffer, which is one of the reasons it’s difficult to diagnose.

What Can I Do To Help?

Listen.  When someone opens up to you about what they are experiencing, just listen.  I remember confiding in people and our conversation usually resulted in a competition for who felt more intolerable pain.  I did not have the energy to defend why the pain I felt was so extreme I could not function.  These conversations were not useful and in the end I stopped confiding in those friends and family members.

While it is challenging to overcome the symptoms of fibromyalgia, it can be done.  I am another person who serves as living proof that it is possible.

How do you manage your new “normal?”

Because I got by with a little help from my girlfriends, I want to help you get help from your girlfriends. As always, please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences.

  1. Biggest thing is truly take care of Your Mind, Body, and Spirit, move your body, Eating healthy…

  2. Ugh, Carmen I can’t imagine that. Although I did suffer through constant tooth pain for months on end. Still working 12 hour days and sometimes having a headache so tense I though my head would pop off, my pain eventually stopped. It sucks when your “close” friends compare what is incomparable but I’m happy that you have some support and that you’re offering it to other women brava!

    • Hey Mys,

That’s all I want– to help those who are “living” with invisible illnesses and those who know someone living with an invisible illness, understand and support each other. Thank you for your comments. Xx

  3. Good luck with it! I guess we all need to relax from time to time with the stress and workaholism we are suffering!
