Ask Your Travel Planner: What is an Airline Codeshare?

What has been your experience with airline codeshares?

What has been your experience with airline codeshares?

Last week while reviewing an itinerary with a client traveling to Italy, I told her that although her air ticket is a US Airways ticket, she would need to check in at United because they were servicing her flight. She seemed a little bewildered, so I advised her this was what we referred to in the travel profession as an “airline codeshare.”

What is an airline codeshare?

An airline codeshare, is the selling of a ticket by one airline while the actual flight is serviced by a different airline. This practice in the airline industry allows airlines to appear as if they have a routes that span the globe. We need flights that span the globe so this is a win-win-win.

What do airline codeshares mean to me?

Really codeshares don’t mean much–if everything goes as planned. You have your seat, you find the flight on the monitors, and you go to the gate and board–perfect. However if you have a connecting flight, and your flight is late, the second airline is usually surprised to see you’re late, which may cause additional delays in getting you rebooked and on the next flight to your destination.

What should I be aware of?

Know which airlines are servicing which flights in your itinerary. This is easy to get from your booking information. Pay attention to who is operating your first flight, this is who you’ll need to check in with on arrival to the airport.

Don’t book a connecting flight that is less than an hour of your estimated landing time, if you’re on a domestic flight. Give yourself no less than a two-hour window for international flights.

What has been your experience with airline codeshares?

As always, please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences.

  1. Especially with the disappearance of many European airlines, code sharing has become more and more common. I’ve flown frequently on code-shared flights, but had never thought of the implications for late/missed flights and any responsibility in that case. Hmmmm … you’ve given me food for thought, Carmen!
